Mission Statement
Created as a Committee of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association, the Institute serves as an informal advisory panel of public safety leaders committed to reducing deaths and injuries to America's Emergency Responders. Members of the Institute, all highly influential and expert in their fields, are personally dedicated to the safety of the men and women who respond to emergencies on or along our nation's streets, roads and highways. Members of the Institute include trainers, writers, managers, government officials, technical experts and leaders who through their individual efforts and collective influence in the public safety world can bring meaningful change.

Worker Struck, Killed in Ohio Construction Zone
A construction worker has been struck and killed while on the job along an interstate highway in Ohio. The State Highway Patrol says 41-year-old Randy Roginski was hit by a passing vehicle late Tuesday night. He'd been standing on the right shoulder alongside a single lane of traffic open on Interstate 271 just north of I-77 near Richfield, 17 miles south of Cleveland in northeast Ohio.
 
Georgia Landscaper Struck By Car, Killed On Freedom Pkwy.
A landscaping worker was struck by a car and killed on Freedom Parkway Wednesday morning, Atlanta police said. Police said that for unknown reasons, the driver left the roadway and struck the landscaper in the median. The worker was not identified.
 
Southern Mississippi Sheriff Dies After Arrest Attempt
A sheriff in southern Mississippi died Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle while trying to make an arrest on a road near the Alabama state line, officials said. George County Sheriff Garry Welford was pronounced dead at 4:23 p.m. after being airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, District Attorney Tony Lawrence said in a news release.
 
Wisconsin Adopt a Highway Volunteer Struck, Killed in Brown County
A 70-year-old Adopt a Highway volunteer was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday evening U.S. Highway 41 in Brown County, according to the State Patrol. The driver was traveling southbound on Highway 41 when it lost control and fatally struck the 70-year-old man about 6:30 p.m
 
Connecticut Police Officer Succumbs to Struck-By Injuries
Sgt. Orville Smith, the officer who was struck by an alleged drunk driver while on private duty Saturday, has died from his injuries, police said. Smith, 64, was in the intensive care unit at Bridgeport Hospital when he passed away from “complications from internal injuries,” according to a statement Shelton police released early Wednesday. Smith was a 39-year-veteran of the Shelton Police Department and was assigned as a patrol supervisor on the day shift.

Forty-eight-year-old Salvador Hernandez and his nephew 20-year-old Jose Hernandez were killed by a passing vehicle in a construction zone along I-40 just west of Yukon.
 
Third California Highway Patrol Officer Dies of Struck By Injuries
The Templeton CHP Officer who was critically injured Sunday night after being hit by a car in Paso Robles and later died at an area hospital, is the fifth California Highway Patrol officer to die in the line of duty in two months. 47-year-old Officer Brett Oswald, who is a 21-year veteran of the force, was investigating an abandoned car on South River Road when the accident happened.
