Florida: Road Ranger Killed in Crash on Florida Turnpike

Part of the Florida Turnpike in Kendall is closed after a road ranger has killed when a truck ran him over, Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the road ranger was on the scene of another accident in the northbound lanes when he was struck on the Turnpike, near Southwest 120th Street, at around 1:30 p.m. The road ranger was only identified as 47 years old. "Most well known road rangers out here on the Turnpike," said Trooper Joe Sanchez. "Apparently the troopers love him. The guy's very helpful with everyone. You know, those are the dangers that these emergencies, assisting, people that work here on the Turnpike and all the road rangers. The service they provide, I mean it's a dangerous drive up here when you have to deal with traffic."

The brakes of the dump truck malfunctioned at the moment of the accident, police said.

FHP confirmed that the ranger died on the scene, and the truck driver stayed on the scene.

According to police, the road ranger was clearing the scene of accident involving a red Ford Mustang. A dump truck struck the road ranger, took down a light pole and stopped in the far east side of the swale of the Turnpike.

The lanes on the Turnpike exit at Southwest 128th Street northbound, south of the accident scene, were reopened to traffic, just before 5 p.m.

The corner arrived on the scene at around 4 p.m.

The Mustang, which had been parked behind the ranger's vehicle has since been towed to an impound lot as evidence.
