Illinois: • Tow truck operator hit by semi, killed on I-55 in Logan County

A tow truck operator from Rochester working to remove a disabled vehicle from the shoulder of Interstate 55 was killed Sunday night after he was hit by a passing semi tractor-trailer.

Jamal W. Horvath, 22, of Rochester, was pronounced dead at the scene, the northbound side of I-55 one mile south of the Broadwell exit in Logan County.

Illinois State Police reported Horvath was standing next to the driver's side of his marked tow truck, which had its amber rotating/flashing lights turned on, as he was removing a vehicle from the right shoulder when the semi hit him at 9:10 p.m.

The semi driver, Michael W. Marsh, 64, of Benton, Arkansas, was not injured. Marsh was cited for failing to yield to a stationary authorized emergency vehicle and improper lane usage, police said. The investigation continues.

The right and center lanes of I-55 near the crash were closed for several hours as police investigated.
