Virginia: Firefighter Struck by Backing Fire Apparatus

Tragic news out of Botetourt County, Virginia. Initial reports are that crews were clearing a Route 220 scene late Friday when a piece of fire apparatus was backing up, and struck and killed a volunteer Firefighter in the Line of Duty.

Volunteer Firefighter Roger Johns, 63, of Eagle Rock was serving as a ground guide / backer when the truck backed into him. Johns later died at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the truck was not injured.
