Australia: Woman charged after Victoria Police officer hit by a car and injured in Melbourne

A Melbourne woman, who police say hit a police officer with her car, has been charged after refusing to stop for questioning over stolen fruit and vegetables. Officers tried to block her car at the intersection of Thomas Holmes Drive and Gordon Street in Maribyrnong on Monday when she refused to stop.

They believe the woman may have panicked and fled when detectives, in plain clothes, got out to speak to her. The detective sergeant was injured after he jumped out of the way and was hit by the car.

The officer was released from hospital after being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

A 32-year-old from Brookfield, in Melbourne's west, was arrested and charged last night with assaulting a police officer, conduct endangering life, intentionally causing injury and theft.
