California: Woman crashes into Orange police car near intersection injuring police officer

A police officer whose car was waiting at a red light Monday night was struck when an apparently intoxicated woman missed her turn and crashed into the patrol car, officials said.

The patrol officer was working shortly before 9:35 p.m. and was in a marked police car northbound on South Yorba Street. After he approached the intersection of East Chapman Avenue, he planned to make a left, police Lt. Fred Lopez said.

But before he could do so, Stephanie Marie McLean, an apparently drunk 55-year-old from Orange in a silver BMW C300, got in the way.

McLean was driving eastbound on East Chapman Avenue and failed to make a southbound turn onto South Yorba Street.

“She did not successfully maneuver the turn and plowed into our police car,” Lopez said.

The unidentified police officer was injured and hospitalized, but released Tuesday morning.

California Highway Patrol investigators responded to the scene and arrested McLean on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.
