Colorado: Troopers severely injured in the line of duty honored by Colorado State Patrol

Two state troopers severely in the line of duty have been honored with awards for bravery. The Colorado State Patrol awarded Trooper Bellamann Hee and Trooper Eugene Hofacker Purple Hearts for their actions in 2014. Hee was injured while throwing stop-sticks to disable a carjacked minivan whose driver was leading police on a long pursuit through the Denver metro area on March 12, 2014.

Hee was on on E-470 between Chambers and Peoria waiting for a carjacking suspect's van. He jumped a guard rail trying to escaped the suspect's vehicle and end up being struck by the van. "Just want to say I did my job. Like any other trooper out here in the blue," Hee said during an award ceremony on Thursday afternoon. He credits the angels of his father and other troopers for helping save his life.

"They're the ones that pulled me out of the way and kept me safe to live another day," said Hee. He also had a message for his fellow troopers. "You guys be vigilant out there. I'll see you in about three to four months. I'll be on the road," Hee said. Trooper Eugene Hofacker was shot as he attempted to help a driver who was stopped on the side of Interstate 70 near Dotsero on May 8, 2014.

He was calling out directions and instructions while bleeding out on the side of the highway, according to the award show announcer. In November, he told CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia he was determined to return to the job he loves. He repeated that message after receiving awards for Valor and the Purple Heart.

"It's been a long journey, long way to go but I'll get there. Looking forward to coming back on the road with you guys." Shane Gosnell, the trooper who had been riding with Hofacker also received a medal for Valor.
