South Carolina: EMS supervisor on long road to recovery after being hit by truck
After being hit by a truck Tuesday while responding to a wreck, Greenwood County EMS supervisor James Glasby's second surgery went well. EMS director Derek Kinney went to see him in the hospital Wednesday, and he said Glasby was in good spirits, and still joking with friends, family and co-workers.
"He was awake and talking," Kinney said. "He's in good spirits -- one of the first things he said is that he wants to come back to work." Glasby, 60, worked in Rescue 2, which operates out of the Greenwood County Courthouse. He responded to a wreck near the Stop-A-Minit at 2206 S.C. Highway 72 W. when the 35-year EMS employee was struck by a 2014 Ford pickup truck.
After being taken to Self Regional Medical Center, Glasby was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition as of Thursday afternoon. Loved ones and total strangers have come together to support him and his family, Kinney said. A GoFundMe page was set up to raise money to help his wife and two daughters with expenses while Glasby is in the hospital. According to the GoFundMe page, his plans were to retire in a little more than a year.
Though the surgeries have been going well, Kinney said it's a long road to recovery. "He's very appreciative of the public, coworkers and strangers from all over the state sending their support and prayers," Kinney said.
Though it may be some time before Glasby is back at work, Kinney said he wants him to focus on getting better before he thinks about work. "He's a strong employee -- always goes above and beyond the call of duty," Kinney said. "He a joker, always driving me up the wall -- in a good way."
