Texas: TTPD honors Officer Jason Sprague in special ceremony
The Texarkana, Texas Police Department held a special ceremony Thursday to commemorate the anniversary of Officer Jason Sprague's death. He died four years ago in a hit and run crash.
Officer Sprague's death was a tremendous loss to the community. He is remembered as a dedicated, loving, and exceptional officer.
Family, friends, and his brothers and sisters in blue gathered in the patrol room Thursday afternoon to honor the memory of Officer Sprague.
At the ceremony, Sprague's son, Caden, who is now 8-years old, was presented with a quilt made of his father's favorite t-shirts.
The quilt was designed and sewn by Officer Shawn Yonts with the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department.
On June 14th 2013, Officer Sprague was struck by a vehicle leaving the scene of a disturbance at Grady T. Wallace park.
He died the next day at a local hospital.
Officer Sprague's widow, Stephanie, says remembering Jason honors the bravery and sacrifices of all officers.
"One of our goals is for people to understand how much that officer is willing to give up and not just the officer, but the family. Jason gave the ultimate sacrifice, but we are the ones living out that ultimate sacrifice," explained Stephanie Sprague West. "We are altered by that for the rest of our lives."
Sprague joined the Texarkana, Texas Police Department in 2012.
Prior to that, he work in law enforcement in Arkansas for about 6 and half years.
Justin Sanders was convicted of murder in Sprague's death.
He's currently serving a 30-year sentence in a Texas prison.
