Virginia: 163 Wrecks After Surprise Snow Wednesday

Law enforcement across the region are warning residents to stay off the roads after snow and ice have left slick, dangerous surfaces. Virginia State troopers had responded to 163 crashes by 8 p.m. Troopers were working on 125 crashes at 9:30 p.m.

The majority of the crashes have involved minor car damage. A state trooper was working at a crash scene on I-495 when he was struck by a van. He was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of minor injuries as a precautionary measure, according to State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller. “Virginians are reminded to please avoid unnecessary travel,” according to a statement. “If you must go out, please slow down, buckle up, be alert for slick road conditions and do not drive distracted.” The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow until midnight.

Roads this evening will be snow covered and slippery, and this will make traveling hazardous, according to the weather service.

The region is preparing for blizzard conditions this weekend, with more than a foot of snow expected across the region.
