Connecticut: State trooper injured during Griswold drug arrest

Two state troopers were treated and released for minor injuries they received while arresting a suspect Thursday. Two undercover state troopers approached a suspect around 4 p.m. Thursday as the suspect arrived home on Norman Road in Griswold. They believed that he was in possession of heroin.

Police said the suspect got back into his vehicle and put it in reverse and attempted leave. One of the troopers was caught by the open driver’s side door and was dragged for about 60 feet. He was thrown to the ground and fired his gun, hitting the driver’s side door of the suspect’s vehicle. When the car stopped, the two troopers placed the suspect into custody without further incident according to police. The officers were taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich where each was treated and released for minor injuries.

The suspect, who was not struck by the round, was also treated for a complaint of a minor injury and taken into custody. Ryan Johnson, 29 of Griswold, was charged with Assault of a Public Safety Officer, Interfering with an Officer, Assault, Illegal Possession of Heroin and Possession of Heroin with Intent to Sell. He is being held on $250,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday in Norwich Superior Court.
