Florida: Motorist tries to run over trooper near Ormond

Wednesday, August 16, 2017

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are looking for a vehicle whose driver they believe tried to run over a trooper on Interstate 95 near Ormond Beach on Tuesday, an agency spokeswoman said. FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said the trooper was parked behind a semi that had broken down and was warning motorists about it. While he was on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 95, a car crossed three lanes anddrove toward the trooper, who had to jump out of the way.

According to Montes, the semi hauling cars broke down on southbound I-95 near Ormond Beach around 4:20 p.m. A mechanic came to the scene to fix the semi and parked behind the large vehicle. The trooper stood outside his patrol car with flashing lights when a southbound2006Chrysler 300 suddenly changed lanes and drove toward him. The trooper made eye contact with the driver before jumping out of theway.

“The trooper had to dive between the semi and patrol car to avoid getting hit,” Montes said. “He suffered a minor arm injury when he jumped out of the way.” The trooper believed the motorist intentionally drove toward him, especially since he made eye contact with the driver, Montes said.

The Chrysler 300 is registered to a person in Fort Lauderdale and troopers are working to make contact with the vehicle owner to see who was driving it, Montes said.
