Georgia: Garbage man killed in early morning crash

A man was struck and killed by an oncoming car while working on Willis Road this morning. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on 55 Willis Road, just east of Hwy 154.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Kevin Buck, 43, was collecting garbage for Pollard Waste Services when he stepped out from behind his truck and was hit by an oncoming car.

Buck was unloading a can from his truck when a witness who was behind his truck at the time said the trash can fell on its side near the road. When Buck went to retrieve it, he was struck by an oncoming vehicle, according to Trooper Ross Buchan with the Georgia State Patrol.

Buck was taken by ground to Piedmont Newnan Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries, according to Buchan. The driver of the oncoming car stayed on scene while the road was closed for two hours. He will not be facing any charges at this time, according to Buchan.

Speed did not play a factor in the accident, nor did drugs or alcohol, Buchan said. The accident is still under investigation.
