Kentucky: 7 injured in crash involving ambulance on I-264 in area of Bells Lane
Seven people were injured in a six-vehicle crash that blocked all lanes of I-264 in the area of Bells Lane on Monday.
Jody Meiman, director of Louisville Metro Emergency Services, said a Louisville Metro EMS unit was transporting a sick person to Audubon Hospital shortly after 2:15 p.m. when the ambulance stopped to provide care after the patient became combative. Police were reportedly in en route to assist when the ambulance was struck by a dump truck.
Officials said after the impact, the dump truck continued traveling eastbound and struck and concrete barrier and stopped. A second dump truck swerved to avoid the collision, and lost control of the truck, striking two other vehicles, police said.
Seven people were injured in the crash, including two EMS personnel and a child, officials said. The EMTs, Kristopher Haeberlin and Christopher Barrett, were transported to University Hospital in serious condition. In all, six were taken to UofL Hospital, and one was taken to Norton Children's Hospital.
Meiman said both EMTs are awake and talking. Haeberlin is reportedly in stable condition with "lots of bumps and bruises," while Barrett is still in serious condition. Both will be admitted overnight for observation. The other five people involved are expected to be OK.
Meiman said Haeberlin and Barrett, who were partners, joined Metro EMS in April and graduated their recruiting classes in August.
Westbound lanes reopened around 6 p.m. Eastbound lanes reopened around 11 p.m. The cause of the crash is under investigation. It is unknown if the dump truck driver will face charges
