Massachusetts: Massachusetts State Police: Motorist driving in I-93 breakdown lane hits driver who exited his disabled car
They call it the breakdown lane for a reason. A motorist driving in the breakdown lane of I-93 Monday afternoon struck another motorist who had exited his disabled vehicle in that lane, according to Massachusetts State Police officials at Framingham headquarters.
At about 3:15 p.m., troopers from the Andover barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash in the breakdown lane of I-93 south near Exit 43 in Andover.
A disabled 2006 Hyundai Tiburon was struck by a 2006 Honda CRV that was traveling in the breakdown lane, according to a preliminary investigation by Trooper Kyle Flanagan. The Hyundai driver, who was standing behind his car at the time of the crash, was struck by the Honda driver, Flanagan said.
The 21-year-old injured motorist from Manchester, New Hampshire, was being treated for "serious injuries" at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, police said. The Honda driver, a 48-year-old Andover man, was uninjured in the crash, which remains under investigation.
As of Monday evening, no charges had been filed against the Andover man, police said.
State Police were assisted at the scene by crews from MassDOT and Andover Fire and Rescue. The crash led to lengthy traffic delays on I-93, police said.
