An officer with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was hit by an 18-wheeler, according the agency. They say the officer is okay and they are thankful no serious injuries occurred. The driver of the semi was arrested and is facing several charges related to the incident. The department released the following press release Saturday afternoon:

MDWFP Officer Struck by Vehicle While Assisting Jones County Sherriff’s Department. A Conservation Officer, with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, was struck by an 18-wheeler earlier today while assisting the Jones County Sherriff’s Department with a house fire.

Conservation Officers were assisting the Jones County Sheriff’s Department with traffic control around the perimeter of the house fire when William T. Parker, Jones County, approached the scene with an 18-wheeler and trackhoe. Parker was given lawful commands to stop, which he did not comply with, and passed by the Conservation Officer striking him with his vehicle and continuing a short distance down the road. Parker continued to be non-compliant with the Officer’s commands and was placed under arrest.

William T. Parker, 50, was arrested by MDWFP and charged with Simple Assault, Disorderly Conduct, and Failure to Yield to Traffic Commands.

The MDWFP Officer suffered minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

“We are lucky that we aren’t talking about an officer being seriously injured or killed today” says Major Chris Reed, MDWFP. “We are blessed that this officer is going home at the end of his shift.”
