New Jersey: Piscataway Police Car Chase Ends in Cemetery; Injured Officer Fires Shot at Suspect
Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced on Wednesday that members of his office are investigating an incident in which a Piscataway police officer was struck by a vehicle and fired a single shot at the suspect, who was apprehended with the use of a Conducted Energy Device.
The shooting was the result of a pursuit that began in New Brunswick and ended at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway, where the suspect led officers through the cemetery, and circled a number of headstones near a funeral service before his vehicle became mired in the soil. The police officer, whose name is being withheld at this time, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital were he was treated for an unspecified injury and was released. The identity of the suspect is being withheld since no charges have been filed yet. He also was taken to a hospital and was being treated for a minor, but unspecified injury.The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General was notified immediately of the incident, in accordance with the state’s use-of-force guidelines. The incident began at 11:18 a.m. Wednesday when the suspect ran a red light in New Brunswick and fled when a Rutgers University Police Department officer attempted to stop the vehicle, a white 2002 Honda Accord. The officer broke off the pursuit as the driver fled.
