New Mexico: Deputy hit by car in SW Albuquerque

A Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputy was struck by a fleeing suspect in a southwest Albuquerque parking lot Friday night. The deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and BCSO has a person in custody.

According to witnesses, the situation started at the Monte Carlo off Central Avenue. A man hit a vehicle and fled toward a Peter Piper’s Pizza restaurant. The man then jumped into another car and fled, hitting two separate vehicles in the parking lot. When the suspect tried to carjack the vehicle, with a 6-year-old girl inside, it caused the vehicle to crash and pin the deputy against another vehicle, Romero said.

“The victim of that vehicle panicked, accelerated and struck the deputy, pinning the deputy between that vehicle and another vehicle,” Sheriff Manny Gonzales said. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed they have a suspect in custody. They have identified the suspect as 33-year-old Patrick A. Candelaria.
