South Carolina: Summerville Police officer hit by vehicle, shoots at suspects

Three people have been treated for non-life threatening injuries after an officer-involved shooting Friday in Summerville. A Summerville Police Department officer investigating reported vehicle break-ins wound up shooting at the suspects after being hit by their vehicle, according to the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

The incident happened early Friday morning in the White Gables subdivision on White Gables Boulevard near Hawthorne Avenue, SLED says. The officer reportedly approached a vehicle witnesses had called to complain about, at which point the vehicle sped toward and hit the officer, per SLED.

The officer fired his weapon at the suspects, who crashed a short distance later and were taken into police custody, according to SLED investigators.

Names of the officer involved nor the suspects have been released as of 11:30 a.m. Friday. The incident remains under investigation by state police. SLED says it was the 21st officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2018.
