Virginia: Town Reacts to Deputy Hit by Car

Deputy Sheriff, D.R. Dunivan, is recovering after being hit by a car Friday morning. Deputy Dunivan has been with the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office for almost a year now, and a suspect remains at large after allegedly hitting Deputy Dunivan in the leg with his car.

"It's a very, very safe neighborhood," said Erin Franklin, who lives on Piccadilly Street. This is why many neighbors are shocked that Deputy Dunivan was hit in the 500 block of quiet, Piccadilly Street in Edinburg. "I feel horrible for the deputy because 'it's the pits' to get hit by a car," added Franklin. "Because emotional, physical, all that trauma.. Am I surprised they fled the scene? Not particularly..."

Around 10:20 a.m. Friday morning, Deputy Dunivan was approaching a car he thought had a suspicious person in it. Police say the suspect, 54-year-old Leon Cominsky, of Martinez, GA, gave the officer a hard time. According to the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office, Cominsky was intoxicated when Deputy Dunivan came up to his car, the deputy tried to arrest Cominsky. That's when Cominsky hit the deputy in the leg with his car as he fled the scene.

Sheriff Timothy Carter, with the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office, says these situations normally don't happen in this part of the Valley. "Well, in my career, it's not typical," said Sheriff Carter. "No, it's not typical."
