New York: 'Move Over' campaign, enforcement happening this week
A weeklong campaign to raise awareness about the state's "Move Over" law kicked off Monday.
The campaign coincides with a special detail by State Police targeted at motorists along the Thruway through Friday.
The campaign features a public service announcement that will be shown on television, promoted at Thruway service areas, in state Department of Motor Vehicles offices and online. There will also be booths set up at Thruway service areas.
The state's "Move Over" law requires drivers to exercise due care and, if safe to do so, move over one lane to provide space for vehicles and personnel working on the side of the road. The law applies if the vehicles and personnel are law enforcement, emergency or hazard vehicles, like tow trucks, fire trucks or construction and maintenance vehicles, as well as volunteer firefighters, ambulance and sanitation vehicles.
The law expanded in July to cover volunteer firefighters and ambulances, and Nov. 1 to cover sanitation vehicles, including garbage and recycling vehicles.
It applies if the vehicles have flashing blue, red, green, white or amber lights, according to the state.
