NIOSH to Implement Pilot Program on Law Enforcement Struck By's
NIOSH is currently working to implement the Law Enforcement Officer Motor Vehicle Crash and Struck-by Fatality Investigations Pilot Program. This project is using the NIOSH Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) model to investigate motor vehicle-related occupational fatalities of law enforcement officers in the United States. The project is funded through an interagency agreement with the National Institute of Justice and is modeled after our Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program.
I have attached our first investigation report that describes the death of a sheriff department sergeant after being struck by a motorist during response to a roadside emergency. We have published this report on the NIOSH MOTOR-VEHICLE SAFETY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS web page. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/leo/default.html
Please feel free to share this report and our web page with your colleagues. Also, please contact me if you would like further information or discussion on our efforts.
