    Phoenix Police Officer Daryl Raetz was struck and killed by a drunk driver while performing a traffic stop in 2013. On Monday, during an emotional ceremony, a group of officers from San Antonio, Texas delivered a special honor chair -- a way for fellow officers to keep the memory of Raetz close to their hearts as they head out on patrol.

  • Virginia: Bill Passes to Honor Trooper Vernon

    12 On Your Side succeeds in helping a family with it's dream of honoring the life of a Virginia State Trooper killed in the line of duty. A bill has made it through the General Assembly that will re-name a bridge in memory of Trooper Jacqueline Vernon. The family is elated and says they kept hitting road blocks until our first story aired. It's close to becoming law. The Virginia State Police Association says two companion bills passed unanimously in the House and Senate and are either on Governor McAuliffe's desk, or on the way for his signature. That prompted the deceased Trooper's brother to reach out to NBC12.

  • Connecticut: Hartford Man Who Drove At Officer Gets Prison

    A 33-year-old Hartford man who drove at a police officer, forcing the officer to open fire at him, pleaded guilty Wednesday and will serve three years in prison. Sadiki Blake, of Enfield Street, was charged Jan. 22, 2014, with trying to run down a police officer about 2:30 a.m. near 34 Mahl Ave.

  • Illinois: Firefighter Policy Change May Have Helped Avert I-55 Tragedy

    Policies changed after the March 2013 death of a Hudson firefighter may have helped prevent a similar tragedy during Tuesday's ice storm. Assistant Chief Jason Hospelhorn of the Dale Township Fire Department was helping victims of a rollover crash on Interstate 55 south of Shirley when a speeding semi "completely took out" his sport utility vehicle, said Fire Chief Ryan Gibson. "He heard the semi coming at a high rate of speed and heard the jake brake (air brake)," Gibson said. "He pushed the other two victims — who were out of their car — toward the ditch and then ran himself." Illinois State Police at Pontiac said the crash was reported at 3:49 a.m., but had no further information since the accident did not result in injuries.

    At an annual awards’ dinner in Baltimore, Maryland, MONOC managers Scott Matin and Peter Dworsky were presented the EMS 10 Innovators in EMS Award for the second year in a row. The EMS 10 Innovators in EMS Award program has a simple mission but a powerful objective: identify some of the best innovators in the EMS industry around the world and alert the EMS community to their achievements to help providers and patients in the future. Matin and Dworsky won for producing a free public safety announcement video for first responders entitled “High Visibility Safety Vests: Be Safe Be Seen.” The video explains the importance of wearing high visibility safety vests whenever working on roadways, and how it can save lives.

  • North Carolina: Remembrance: Sheriff's Office Memorializes Deputy Killed on Duty in 1934

    More than 80 years after an Alamance County sheriff’s deputy was fatally struck by a car while walking down the road during an investigation, the sheriff’s office held a memorial service for him Wednesday — a gesture the sheriff said wasn’t done when George Jefferson Massey died in 1934.

    CVVFA President Walter Robertson announced today that Chief Ed Mann former Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner has accepted the position of Director of Continuing Education of the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. “Ed has been a member of ERSI for years and we are pleased he agreed to take a higher profile in our organization” said Robertson.
