Michigan: Crash that killed tow truck operator remains under investigation

The crash that killed 28-year-old Jason Schultz of Clyde Township remains under investigation. Deputy Steve Campau, the St. Clair County Sheriff Department public information officer, said the 18-year-old Fort Gratiot man involved in the crash is not in custody.

Police said Schultz, the owner and operator of Preferred Towing, was pulling a vehicle from a ditch on the west side of North Road in Clyde Township when he was struck by a southbound vehicle about 6:30 a.m. Friday. The tow truck was facing northbound in the southbound lane.

The 18-year-old drove onto the shoulder of the road, passing the truck and hit Schultz, killing him instantly, according to the sheriff department.

He also hit the tow cable and the vehicle in the ditch.

Cody Hilliker, 21, of Burtchville Township, was in the stuck vehicle. He was injured and taken to McLaren Port Huron for treatment. An update on his condition was not immediately available. Heather Gaffney, hospital spokeswoman, said Tuesday afternoon he was not listed as a patient.

The 18-year-old was taken to the sheriff department for questioning following the crash.

North River Road between Krafft and Keewahdin roads was closed for several hours following the crash.

Police have not released the driver’s name.

Schultz was married and a father to three children, according to his obituary.
