Maryland: 3 Md. state vehicles hit by suspected drunk drivers
Three Maryland state officials’ vehicles were hit by suspected drunk drivers over the weekend — including one state trooper whose car was hit while he was arresting another drunk driver, and another whose police car was hit while it sat in his driveway. State police said they were not making a particular push to increase drunk driving enforcement over this weekend, as they sometimes do. But from Friday through Sunday, state troopers arrested 77 suspected impaired drivers, including the cases involving state vehicles.
The arrests occurred across the state. In the D.C. suburbs, they included a driver who crashed under the apparent influence of a controlled substance on the side of the Beltway near the Wisconsin Avenue exit, and a driver who caused a multi-vehicle crash on I-270 and then fled the scene.
Farther away, a state trooper in Washington County had his police car parked in his driveway when a person riding an all-terrain vehicle hit it on Friday night. Police said the ATV driver was under the influence at the time.
A few hours later, a state trooper pulled over an impaired driver on Piney Branch Road in Montgomery County. A sergeant stopped to assist with that arrest. While he was doing so, his parked patrol car was struck by another impaired driver.
And late Sunday night, a driver went off the roadway and hit a State Highway Administration truck which had all of its emergency lights on. That crash caused a fire. The SHA worker was hit, but refused medical treatment. The drunk driver was taken to a hospital and will face charges, state police said.
