Indiana: State trooper struck by vehicle while directing traffic at Mill Race Marathon in Columbus

An Indiana State Trooper was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic for the Mill Race Marathon in Columbus Saturday morning. Police say 64-year-old Sherry S. Waggoner hit First Sergeant Perry Hewitt with her 2006 Honda passenger car on State Street around 8:19 a.m.

Officers believe Waggoner was traveling eastbound and attempted to turn north onto Mapleton Street when the sun may have obstructed her view, causing her to hit Sergeant Hewitt. The collision caused Sergeant Hewitt to suffer a complaint of pain to his lower extremities. He was transported by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital where his minor injuries were treated and he was released.

Numerous law enforcement officers were working the event, where around 4,000 runners and walkers participated.
