Another man had stopped and began to help directing traffic with a flashlight, while Pace as trying to tow the minivan. That's when another driver started heading directly toward the minivan.

The man directing traffic yelled "Watch out!" and Pace tried to get out of the way, but his leg was caught and pinned between two vehicles.

"If that individual, Brian, was not out directing traffic and had not warned us, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation today," said Pace. "He's a big big big factor. I want to say a special thank you to him."

Pace's injuries were not serious, but he was taken to the hospital with leg bruising. He was later released.

As for the 67-year-old driver who struck the officer, he was taken to the hospital. His condition has not been released.
