Capt. Stan Elrod, a 28-year veteran of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, was hit by a vehicle while training Thursday in Madison County. He was a regional supervisor in Gainesville.

A veteran of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division died Thursday in an accident while on duty, the agency said.

Capt. Stan Elrod, who supervised the DNR’s Region 2 office in Gainesville, was hit by a car while training in Madison County, agency spokesman Mark McKinnon said Friday. He was dead when troopers responded to the crash on Hunt Road around 7:40 p.m., according to Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Stephanie Stallings. Elrod, 49, of Danielsville, had been with the DNR for 28 years.

A preliminary investigation revealed a maroon 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling northbound when the driver failed to maintain his lane and hit Elrod on the southbound shoulder.
