Pennsylvania: Emergency responder struck, killed while responding to crash on Interstate 70

Pennsylvania Emergency Responder struck, killed while responding to crash on Interstate 70. The victim was identified by Rostraver West Newton Emergency Services as Matthew Smelser.

According to a release from state police, EMS personnel were tending to an injured person when their ambulance was struck by a commercial vehicle at about 5:30 a.m. in South Huntingdon Township.

"It's with great sorrow and pain that we announce the tragic loss of Paramedic Supervisor Matthew Smelser, he was killed this morning while attending to an injured person on interstate 70 . Please keep him, his family and all of us in your thoughts and prayers," the Facebook post read.

Police said weather conditions had caused the road to become icy at the time of the crash.

Smelser's death is under investigation by state troopers in Belle Vernon.
