Iowa: Ankeny fire truck hit by passing truck in slick conditions Sunday
A passing pickup crashed into the rear of an Ankeny fire truck Sunday morning on Interstate 35, officials said.
The incident occurred after the Ankeny and Elkhart fire departments were called around 8:30 a.m. to the 100 mile marker of the interstate for a crash involving three vehicles.
As the departments were responding, three additional crashes occurred, a city of Ankeny news release said.
While Ankeny firefighters were assisting at the scene, the release said a pickup truck lost control and struck the rear of the fire engine, causing heavy damage to the truck and minor damage to the fire engine.
No Ankeny firefighters were injured, and neither were the driver of the pickup or an infant passenger. Two people involved in the initial crash sustained minor injuries.
Ankeny Fire Department deputy chief Rob Chiappano said he believes the driver was traveling too fast for the conditions, which had ice, blowing snow and visibility of under 30 feet.
"I would hope that the takeaway is not so much that our engine got struck, but just a reminder to people to drive appropriate to the weather," he said. "Luckily no one was hurt, but maybe next time they're not so lucky."
