Texas: Man who struck Corpus Christi police officer could face intoxication manslaughter, assault
A 26-year old man faces multiple charges, including intoxication manslaughter, in the death of a Corpus Christi police officer.
Brandon Portillo is accused of striking the marked police vehicles, and also officers Alan McCollum and Michael Love, during a traffic stop late Friday night, police chief Mike Markle said in a press conference on Saturday.
McCollum, 46, died from his injuries late Friday night and Love is still hospitalized.
Markle said at 9:43 p.m. three officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle who was racing on the westbound lanes of State Highway 358 at Carroll Lane.
As the officers were out of their units, a vehicle driven by Portillo, struck the marked vehicles and officers McCollum and Michael Love, Markle said.
Markle said McCollum was transported to the hospital Friday night before "succumbing to his injuries." Love is in stable condition. Another officer was not injured.
Portillo was believed to be intoxicated and was transported to a local hospital where a blood warrant was obtained. After he was cleared from the hospital, Portillo was transported to a city detention center before he was arrested, Markle said.
On January 31, 2020 officers were conducting a traffic stop on HWY 358 when they were struck by a vehicle. This incident has left us mourning the death of Officer Alan McCollum and praying for the full recovery of Officer Michael Love.
Officer Love sustained major injuries but is in stable condition and is recovering at a local hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Love as he recovers from his injuries.
Officer Michael Love has been a police officer with the Corpus Christi Police Department since July 2017.
