New Jersey: Driver faces DUI charges after Gloucester Twp. officer struck on AC Expressway

Saturday, March 30, 2019

A Gloucester Township police officer somehow escaped serious injury when another driver crashed into his parked vehicle, crushing the left side of the cruiser, police said.

That driver, Gary McFadden, 44, of Magnolia, is charged with suspicion of DUI, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and assault by auto, police said.

The Gloucester Township Police Department released photos of the heavily damaged vehicle Thursday afternoon, hours after the midnight crash on the westbound Atlantic City Expressway near mile marker 41.

"The officer was wearing his seat belt, and the vehicle was positioned in a way which is believed to have kept the officer from being seriously injured," Gloucester Township Police said in a press release.

The officer was one of a number of Gloucester Township police officers assisting the New Jersey State Police with traffic control following an earlier accident on the expressway, said state Trooper Alejandro Goez.

This happened when they were in the process of clearing the previous accident," Goez said.

At the time the officer's vehicle was struck, the car was stationary and the vehicle's emergency lights were activated, according to police.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Cooper Hospital in Camden as a precaution to be treated for minor injuries, police said.

McFadden was not injured, police said.
