(TX) United States Emergency Responder Struck-By Death #10 of 2026

Reserve Deputy Constable Heather Avery who was killed in the line of duty while assisting with traffic control operations on Interstate 10 near Winnie, Texas.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., Deputy Avery was positioned in the outside lane with her emergency lights activated, actively supporting traffic management efforts. During this operation, a commercial Mack truck traveling eastbound failed to stop and struck her patrol vehicle from the rear.

Deputy Avery was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured. The incident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Deputy Avery was known as a dedicated member of the Jefferson County Constable’s Office and served as a firearms instructor and mentor within her community, leaving a lasting impact on those she trained and served alongside.
