(OH) North Randall firefighter killed, woman seriously injured after being hit by alleged drunk driver while fixing flat tire in Pepper Pike
CLEVELAND — A man died and a woman was seriously injured after being struck by an alleged drunk driver while fixing a flat tire at the side of a road in Pepper Pike early Saturday morning, police say, and the deceased victim has since been identified as a North Randall firefighter.
Pepper Pike police and firefighters were dispatched to Fairmount Boulevard near Brainard Road just after 2:45 a.m. and found three vehicles were involved in the incident, according to a press release. A man and woman were found between two of the vehicles with serious injuries that required "life saving measure," according to police.
The woman was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition Saturday morning. The man died from his injuries at the scene.
On Saturday evening, the North Randall Fire Department confirmed the man who lost his life is 29-year-old Cameron Duvall, who had been a firefighter and paramedic with the village since 2022.
"His dedication, professionalism, and willingness to serve others exemplified the very best of our department and our Village. Cameron's loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, police officers, Village employees, elected officials, and the entire North Randall community," Mayor David Smith and Fire Chief Marshall Shorts said in a joint statement posted to Facebook. "During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that you keep Cameron's family, friends, and his brothers and sisters in the fire service in your thoughts and prayers."
According to Pepper Pike police, investigators found a car had become disabled with a flat tire, and the driver called for roadside assistance from the scene. Police say Duvall and the woman arrived to help and parked in front of the disabled vehicle.
"While they were working near the trunk of the disabled vehicle, a third motorist struck them and the disabled vehicle," the police department said.
The third driver was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead. The driver's name has not been released.
"The City of Pepper Pike extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of these two victims, along with everyone affected by this tragic incident," the police department said.
