New Hampshire: Windham police officer struck by car

Sun glare and malfunctioning traffic signals may have been factors in a crash late Friday afternoon that injured a police officer who was directing traffic in Windham, N.H., authorities said.

Officer Van Hirtum was struck by a car around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 111 and Range Road, where he was directing traffic, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement.

The car was driven by Sean Norton, 48, of Salem, N.H., the statement said.

Hirtum was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for treatment of undisclosed injuries.State troopers who responded to the scene were told the traffic signals at the intersection were not working properly at the time of the collision because of a power outage, according to the statement.
