(OH) First responder hit, killed while helping driver who got stuck in a ditch

Fire Lieutenant Paul Charles Mickolick who was helping a man get his truck out of a ditch died after he was struck by a vehicle late Friday night. An F-150 that got stuck in a ditch on Stratton Road, just south of Jeffrey Road in Congress Township around 10:30 Friday night. Lt. Mickolick with the Town and Country Fire District arrived on scene in his personal vehicle to help the stuck driver. A driver going south on Stratton Road drove off the right side of the road and into the ditch, hitting the F-150 as well as Mickolick and the driver he was assisting who’d been standing near the truck.

Lieutenant Paul Mickolick responded to an emergency call of a vehicle accident. When he got to the scene, Lieutenant Mickolick discovered a pickup truck that was stuck in a ditch. After radioing other emergency responders to notify them of what he found at the scene and slow their response, Lieutenant Mickolick began to assist the driver of the pickup truck.

A short time later, another vehicle drove off the right side of the roadway and into the ditch striking both Lieutenant Mickolick and the driver of the pickup truck. Other emergency responders got to the scene and initiated CPR. Lieutenant Mickolick was then transported to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, was pronounced deceased. The driver of the pickup truck was flown by helicopter to another hospital with serious injuries.
