(VA) Highway safety patroller struck, killed on I-95 near Dumfries
A Virginia Department of Transportation Safety Service Patroller was killed along Interstate 95 in Prince William County Saturday night when a car lost control and hit him and the driver of the disabled vehicle he was assisting, according to police.
The crash occurred at 7:58 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 in the northbound lanes near Dumfries. The service patrol worker, a VDOT contractor, was helping the driver of a disabled Audi on the right shoulder and travel lane of the interstate when a Chrysler 300 Sedan lost control, crossed all lanes of travel, and struck both the patroller and the Audi driver, according to Matt Demlein, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police.
The patroller was taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, Demlein said.
The patroller's name was not released.
The driver of the Audi was taken to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Demlein said.
Charges are pending in the crash, which remains under investigation.
