(CA) Tow truck driver killed in hit-and-run while assisting vehicle on Los Angeles freeway

A tow truck driver working on a disabled vehicle was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on the 110 Freeway early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway near Florence Avenue.

Investigators learned that a motorist traveling southbound on the freeway fled the scene after striking the victim, who was working on a vehicle on the right shoulder of the freeway, California Highway Patrol Officer Gomez said.

The unidentified tow truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel.

Authorities later found the vehicle that struck the victim, but the driver had already fled the area on foot, the spokesperson said.


Authorities ID tow truck driver killed by hit-and-run driver on South LA freeway

LOS ANGELES – A tow truck driver who was struck by a hit- and-run vehicle and killed while assisting a motorist stopped on the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles was identified by county authorities Wednesday.

Carlos Trejo, Jr., 57, was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at approximately 1:35 a.m. Tuesday to the southbound freeway and the West Florence Avenue exit, according to CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig.

The driver of a southbound vehicle did not stop after striking Trejo, who was working on a vehicle on the right shoulder, a CHP officer told KTLA5.

The suspect’s vehicle was later found, but the driver remained at large, the station reported.
