(FL) Traffic responder struck, killed while clearing fiery I-95 crash in Brevard County

A traffic incident responder working to clear a vehicle fire on I-95 was killed after being hit by a semi-truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said it happened just after 9 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 228 in Mims, Brevard County.

Investigators said the incident involved a semi-truck with a trailer and a CMTI traffic incident response truck that was on scene assisting with a vehicle fire.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation.

What we know right now is that the 63-year-old semi-truck driver accused of hitting the CMTI driver was not injured and stayed at the scene.

The driver of the CMTI truck, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the CMTI truck was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

All northbound lanes of I-95 are shut down at SR-46. Drivers traveling north have to exit there.

A separate crash, unrelated to the first two incidents on I-95, has shut down all the southbound lanes. Drivers traveling south need to exit at Deering Pkwy.

US-1 is the best detour to avoid the delays and closures along I-95 through Mims.
