(GA) Forsyth Sheriff's Office mourns death of former employee who was struck while assisting Christmas parade traffic control

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said Sunday it was mourning the death of Robert Muth, a "beloved former employee and active volunteer" who was struck while assisting with traffic control for the Cumming Christmas Parade.

Muth was taken to North Fulton Hospital after the incident, but passed away from his injuries the sheriff's office said.

He had been a sergeant in the Boca Raton, Florida Police Department for more than two decades before joining the Forsyth Sheriff's Office as a bluecoat security officer in the Judicial Operations Division in 2022, where he remained until last year. He then retired and continued volunteering with the Citizens Helping in Policing Unit and in interoffice communications.

"His dedication, professionalism, and willingness to serve wherever needed exemplified the very best of our volunteer program," the sheriff's office said. "Mr. Muth’s legacy of service and dedication to this agency and our community will not be forgotten."

The City of Cumming said the incident happened a little after 7:19 p.m. at the intersection of Castleberry Road and Buford Dam Road.

"Emergency personal immediately responded to the scene and discovered Mr. Muth had sustained significant trauma. Mr. Muth was immediately transported to the hospital for medical care. The City of Cumming traffic investigation team worked the scene to collect evidence and obtain witness statements. The involved driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation," the city said. "We are sad to announce Mr. Muth succumbed to his injuries this morning. Charges will be filed, but the investigation is still active and ongoing."

The city said its thoughts are with "all those affected during this difficult time."

"We remain committed to a thorough investigation of the incident and to supporting the community as we mourn this loss," the city said. "...Our hearts are with the family of Mr. Muth, the medical staff, and the emergency personal who responded to this incident. This is a very tragic time for all, especially the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office as Mr. Muth was one of their own."
