Michigan: Tow truck drivers to honor Westland man killed in crash
A group of tow truck drivers plan to hold a parade Wednesday in Westland to honor one of their own who was killed last week trying to help a stranded motorist.
Fred Scroggs, 25, of Westland, was one of two people killed last Thursday in a collision on westbound Interstate 696 at the I-96 and I-275 interchange.
The group of tow truck drivers will gather at Westland Mall on Warren and Wayne roads at 10 a.m. Wednesday to form a procession.
Organizers said the parade will leave the shopping center at about 10:45 a.m. to go to Scroggs’ funeral, scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Uht Funeral Home, 35400 Glenwood Road in Westland.
They will gather for another procession following the service, according to organizers.
“We hope to see you all out there to show your support to his family and friends,” they wrote on the Freddie Scroggs Memorial Parade Facebook page.
Police said Scroggs’ tow truck was stopped on the left shoulder of the freeway Thursday as he helped a motorist change a flat tire.
Another vehicle left the roadway and struck the tow truck. Both Scroggs and the driver of the vehicle in the collision, a 37-year-old Canton Township man, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman Scroggs was helping was not injured, police said.
