North Carolina: Trooper injured in I-40 wreck

A Highway Patrol trooper who was responding to a wreck Wednesday on Interstate 40 was injured after his vehicle was struck by a speeding driver. Trooper Brian Anthony was inside his patrol vehicle and working a wreck on the westbound side of I-40 near mile marker 38 at 11:51 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by a 2004 GMC Envoy, trooper Kelly Rhodes said.

The driver of that vehicle, Enrique Vazquez, 33, of Asheville, hydroplaned due to excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle and struck the trooper's patrol vehicle in the rear.

Then, the trooper's vehicle struck a vehicle driven by Sheila Brown, 44, of Cherokee, and was knocked 20 feet down the Interstate, Rhodes said.

Anthony and Brown were transported to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries described as back and neck pain, Rhodes said.

Vazquez was charged with exceeding safe speed and no operator's license, Rhodes said.

Information about what caused the initial wreck or if charges would be pending in that incident was not available Wednesday afternoon.
