Massachusetts: Springfield police investigate back-to-back accidents

Police investigated a car crash on Chestnut Street Sunday morning that injured one person, but it was the police themselves who were nearly among the injured. Springfield officers initially responded to the report of a single-car crash at the intersection of Chestnut and Stafford streets, just in front of Sacred Heart Church at about 2 a.m. A Honda Civic lost control while traveling northbound on Chestnut and struck an aluminum light pole, knocking it over.

One person was transported to the Baystate Medical Center by ambulance. As police worked the scene of that crash, a second car approached at what police said was a high rate of speed. The driver apparently caught sight of the downed light pole laying across the roadway, swerved to avoid the debris, and narrowly missed officers. The car continued across a wide sidewalk to slam into the front of the church.

One person was evaluated at the scene by emergency medical personnel but it was unclear if he was transported to the hospital.

Police said no charges were filed against the driver.
