(AR) 18-year-old roadside service worker killed by car while repairing tire on I-40 in Arkansas, ASP says

EARLE, Ark. - An 18-year-old roadside service worker was killed last week while he was repairing a tire on Interstate 40 in the small Arkansas city of Earle, state police said.

On Thursday, Arkansas State Police (ASP) said they were still looking for the driver in the fatal hit-and-run crash, which was reported around 10:30 p.m. Oct. 10 on I-40 just east of the Earle exit, the agency said.

ASP identified the 18-year-old killed as Jacob Allen Marquis, of Marked Tree.

The agency said Marquis worked a nearby business and was called to repair a tire for a vehicle on the side of I-40. ASP said he arrived to do the work around 8:30 p.m. that day.

ASP arrived to find a service truck parked on the interstate's shoulder with its hazard lights flashing and someone lying in the right lane of traffic. The agency said a car struck Marquis, killing him.

Arkansas State Police said anyone who might have been driving through the area during the time of the crash and saw the vehicle involved to call investigators. They can report tips to ASP at 870-970-6082.


Jacob Allen Marquis, 18, of Marked Tree, Arkansas departed this life on Friday, October 10, 2025. He was born on October 27, 2006 in West Memphis, Arkansas to Michael Phillip Marquis and Cheryl Renee Bratton. Jacob worked as a diesel mechanic for TA-Travel Centers of America. He earned his welding certificate from Arkansas Northeastern College in Blytheville, Arkansas. Jacob enjoyed hunting, fishing, gaming and spending time with his friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents: Clay and Betty Bratton and Darlene Harvey.

Jacob is survived by his parents: Cheryl Bratton Profitt of Marked Tree, Arkansas and Michael and Stephany Marquis of Marked Tree, Arkansas, two step brothers: Macen and Vincent Delgado of Marked Tree, Arkansas, four sisters: Cheyenne Proffitt of Marked Tree, Arkansas, Isabella Parish of Osceola, Arkansas, Mindy Proffitt of New York and Alex Rosse of Jonesboro, Arkansas.

A visitation will be held Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Delancey Funeral Home in Marked Tree.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Delancey Funeral Home in Marked Tree.

Burial will follow in Marked Tree Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of Delancey Funeral Home in Marked Tree.
