Virginia: Jury sentences man convicted of striking, killing tow truck driver

Dwayne Miller Jr., the man found guilty of fatally hitting a tow truck driver last year, could spend the next 11 years in prison. A jury recommended that sentence for the 31-year-old in court Thursday afternoon.

Miller was found guilty of aggravated manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. The wreck killed 22-year-old Jason Bailey, who was struck by Miller’s SUV along 1-295 in Hanover County while the tow truck driver was removing a vehicle on the side of the highway in May of 2014.

After the SUV hit Bailey, it crashed in a ditch 50-feet away, police said. That’s when Miller got out of the SUV and ran, according to police.

“Residents of the subdivision provided a description of a man seen running through the neighborhood,” a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said at the time. “Based on the witness statements, the two troopers located the subject and took him into custody without incident.”

Miller will be formally sentenced Jan. 25.
