Wisconsin: Endeavor community reacts to firefighter killed on accident scene

A beloved Endeavor firefighter is being remembered for his heroic acts and kindness to the community.

56-year old Larry Millard was killed while working an accident scene. Investigators say a driver failed to move over and fatally struck the firefighter.

Near the crash-site on I-39, close to Mile Marker 100, is where a memorial to honor Millard was set up Saturday morning by the Endeavor- Moundville Volunteer Fire Department.

"It's very sad," long-time friend Steve Harbistine said while snapping photos of the display featuring Millard's gear on top of a fire truck.

"We're all very devastated, very sad. Larry pretty much had a heart of gold, he loved everybody, he loved being on the fire department."

Due to the tragedy, the fire department declined comment but their prayers are with the family. A family that is trying to grieve.

"He knew all his fellow firemen after he was hit... and he shook his head and smiled," Millard's sister Cindy Marquardt said.

She says her brother shouldn't have died because someone wouldn't move over.

"Please when you see the red and blue lights, take your foot off the gas pedal, you don't have to chase them, you don't have to keep up with them,"

Wisconsin State Highway Patrol Sergeant Travis Wanless says the job of any emergency personnel is scary.

"Anyone on the side of the road knows that traffic does move at a very high rate of speed, and people aren't paying attention as they should and tragedies happen," he said.

In Wisconsin, the state law is to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles, county maintenance vehicles or tow trucks.

The crash remains under investigation.
