Colorado: state trooper Bellamann Hee, hit by carjacker, is back on job
A state trooper who was nearly killed by a carjacker who led police on long chase in metro Denver is back on the job.
The Colorado State Patrol said Thursday that Trooper Bellamann Hee has returned to duty nearly 21 months after being hit by Ryan Stone in March 2014.
Hee was hit while throwing stop sticks in an attempt to stop the second vehicle in a series of three used during the chase through five metro-area counties. The sequence began when the suspect allegedly stole an SUV with a 4-year-old boy inside.
The suspect later abandoned that first SUV and carjacked the second vehicle while AIRTRACKER7 broadcast the chase live on television. After Trooper Hee was hit, the suspect carjacked a second vehicle before eventually crashing in Douglas County, where he was arrested.
The 75-mile chase was televised live and involved officers from a dozen agencies.
Stone was wanted in a drug case before the chase occurred.
Court records show Stone was driving at approximately 100 mph when he struck Hee during the chase.
Stone was sentenced to 160 years in prison for 18 charges, including attempted manslaughter.
