Virginia: Trooper injured in multi-vehicle crash on Route 288 released from hospital

A Virginia State Police trooper injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Route 288 on Monday, February 15, has been released from the hospital. Trooper J.T. Glasscock is still recovering and being treated for his injuries, but he is home now.

Trooper Glasscock was one of three people injured in the crashes. The separate incidents occurred in the same vicinity of Route 288 near Lucks Lane. Virginia State Police say they were called to a two-vehicle crash at approximately 5:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Route 288. According to police, a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Volkswagen sedan were traveling north on Route 288 when they collided and slid into the median. The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck, 53-year-old Sharon L. Letender, of Chester, was not injured in the crash. The two passengers in the Volkswagen were also unharmed.

As Trooper Glasscock continued investigating the crash, he was standing with the wrecked vehicles in the median. Letender and one of the two Volkswagen passengers, an adult male, were also in the median when a 2010 Honda Civic traveling south on Route 288 ran off the left side of the highway.

The Civic first struck Trooper Glasscock’s patrol car.

The impact of that crash spun the Civic around and caused it to slide into the median, where it struck Trooper Glasscock, Letender and the male passenger. Letender was thrown when she was struck by the Civic. She hit a Chesterfield County firefighter also on the scene of the accident.

Letender died at the scene.

Trooper Glasscock and the male passenger were transported to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries. The firefighter was transported to St. Francis Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

There’s been no word about the condition of the others injured on scene.

The driver of the Civic, 28-year-old Nicholas B. Pisula, of Richmond, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash. He was charged with reckless driving.

Speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
