Massachusetts: Firefighter Nearly Struck; Man Charged

A Provincetown man with 90 prior criminal charges in Massachusetts was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly assaulted a firefighter and crashed a car into a police cruiser while driving drunk, according to police. Rodney Armour, 72, is facing charges of operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger, assault on ambulance personnel, operating under the influence of alcohol, and failure to stop for police, according to a statement from Yarmouth police.

At around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Yarmouth police officers responded to the intersection of Union Street and Route 6A for a report of a man who was unresponsive and slumped over the steering wheel of a car, according to the statement. As firefighters were treating Armour, who was seated in a 2001 Jaguar XJ8, he suddenly started the vehicle and drove away, requiring a Yarmouth firefighter to jump back from the car and a fire department lap top to fall off the roof of the car, according to the statement.

Yarmouth police Officer Mark Noone used his cruiser to block the man from entering Route 6A, driving next to the Jaguar as it crossed parking spaces next to the road, according to police. Armour crashed into the passenger side of the cruiser, and Noone turned his car into the Jaguar, pushing it off the road, according to police.

Once the cars were stopped, Noone left his cruiser and ordered Armour to open his locked doors, but he refused, police said. Another officer, Albert Sprague, broke a window and took the keys out of the ignition, according to police. Armour had warrants out for his arrest in both Barnstable and Orleans district courts, according to the statement.
