MOVE OVER: IT'S THE LAW IN DELAWARE

A new Delaware law that took effect last week aims to protect emergency workers --but it is a commonsense protection that applies as much to every motorist and passenger on the road as to emergency workers. It's called the "move over" law, and it requires drivers approaching stopped emergency vehicles with lights flashing to move a lane away from the equipment or if that's not possible, to at least slow down to a safe speed.

Delaware joins 32 other states that have "move over" laws on the books. Delaware's version imposes a $25 fine for violations; Maryland isn't one of them. Emergency workers --those traveling and working out of police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks and the like --are particularly vulnerable to injury by drivers.
